Grumpy old Scrooge walks down a foggy, snowy London street past festive shop windows

Retold from: Charles Dickens

Charles Dickens was an English novelist, the author of “Oliver Twist”, “David Copperfield” and “Great Expectations”.

He was born in Portsmouth in 1812. At twelve he worked in a blacking factory while his father was in debtors’ prison, and he never forgot poor children. Dickens died in 1870.

“A Christmas Carol” (1843) was written in a few weeks and sold out by Christmas Eve. For many years Dickens read it aloud to audiences himself. The book helped shape the Christmas we know: a family together, a festive dinner and kindness to others.

Here you can read “A Christmas Carol”: about the miser Scrooge, who is visited by three spirits on Christmas night.
