A Pillow for the Moon
The Moon just can’t fall asleep, so little Sonya and the animals sew him a soft pillow out of a little cloud.
- A calm story
Once upon a time there lived a little girl named Sonya. Evening came. Mommy tucked Sonya in under her blanket, kissed her on the nose and turned out the light.
Sonya closed her eyes. And then she heard:
"Aaah-aaah!"
Someone was yawning! Sonya sat up and peeked out the window. And there, above the forest, hung the Moon. Round and yellow. Tossing this way, turning that way.
"Moon, why aren’t you asleep?" asked Sonya.
"I can’t," sighed the Moon. "The sky is hard. My head isn’t comfy. Now, if only I had a pillow…"
"I’ll sew you one!" said Sonya. "Only I can’t do it all by myself."
So she opened the window and called out softly:
"Who will help the Moon?"
Hop, hop! Along came the bunny.
"Me! I’ll bring dandelion fluff."
"Who will help the Moon?" Sonya called a second time.
Rustle, rustle! Down the fir tree scampered the squirrel.
"Me! I’ll bring soft moss."
"Who will help the Moon?" Sonya called a third time.
Hoo, hoo! In flew Granny Owl.
"Me! I’ll give a feather, my very fluffiest."
And down from a twig, on a silky thread, came a little spider.
"And I’ll do the sewing. My thread is thin and strong."
"But what will we make the pillow out of?" Sonya wondered.
They all looked up. And above the tree floated a little cloud. White and fluffy, like a kitten.
"Little cloud, little cloud, will you be a pillow for the Moon?"
"I will," whispered the little cloud, and it floated down, right to the window.
The bunny put in the fluff. The squirrel put in the moss. Granny Owl put in the feather. And the spider sewed: in and out, in and out. Sonya held the little cloud by its edge so it wouldn’t drift away.
Sonya touched the pillow with her finger.
"Ooh, so soft!"
"So soft," squeaked the squirrel.
"Just like being at Mommy’s side," laughed the bunny.
Sonya blew gently: whoo-oo-oo! And the cloud pillow floated up. Higher and higher, all the way up to the Moon.
The Moon laid his cheek on it.
"Aaah…" he yawned. "How soft. Thank you, Sonya. Thank you, little friends."
And he closed his eyes. Now he shone softly, so softly, as if he were singing a lullaby.
The animals went home. The bunny to his burrow. The squirrel to her hollow. The spider to his twig. And Granny Owl flapped her wings:
"Good night, Sonya."
Sonya closed the window, climbed into bed and hugged her own pillow.
"Good night, Moon," she whispered.
But the Moon was already asleep. And a moment later, Sonya fell asleep too.
