Timko

The Timko series follows a little hedgehog through his first kindergarten day, the doctor, a move and a quarrel; for children aged 2–12.

Timko is bold and curious by day, and before every big step he stops and says, “Breathe in, breathe out, and off we go!” Around him are Mom, who bakes pies “just in case” whenever she is nervous, Dad the carpenter, who hunts for the pencil behind his own ear and measures Timko on the height board, little sister Lilia, who grows from story to story, and wise Granny Owl with her riddles. Jealousy, sadness, anger and fear are named plainly and nobody is shamed for them, so the stories are good to read together and talk over afterwards.

Read them in order: a new baby sister, the first day at kindergarten, the big potty, a visit to the doctor, a wobbly first tooth, moving house, a quarrel between friends, being the new one at school, and a letter to Saint Nicholas.
